The top and side rulers in Word are used to set your margins, and also any Indents you might require for your paragraphs. They should display by default. If they don’t, here are instructions on how to make them display.
- In Word 2011 for Mac, you can adjust the margins by clicking the Layout tab on the Ribbon and using the options in the Margins group, or by dragging the margin sliders in the rulers. Of course, first you need to turn on the rulers at the top and left edge of the document area in Word for Mac: To do so, choose View→Ruler when in Draft View.

While using Word for Mac one or more Toolbars are missing and cannot be added. This behavior can be caused by one of these things: The oval button in the upper-right corner of the document was clicked. This button 'toggles' display of toolbars on and off. Microsoft Word 2013 and 2016. Click the View tab, then click the Ruler check box to show the horizontal and vertical ruler. Microsoft Word 2007 and 2010. Microsoft Word 2007 and 2010 use the Ribbon instead of the file menu. Enabling and disabling the rulers is done through either of the following methods.
If you can’t see the rulers, click on the View Ruler button at the top of your right-hand scroll bar:
This will display both of your rulers, and you can use the sliders to adjust your margins:
To turn off the rulers, simply press that button again, and they will disappear!
